Today’s Beauty Eats recipe is for all those ladies that need a BREAK. We’ve done a number of skin-friendly recipes on this series, but to make things interesting, today we’re making a DIY mask. So ladies, kick back and take some “me” time this week…

……………………………………………………

Connie (from Chronicles of a Beauty Nerd) and I have been busy preparing for our first Beauty Eats live event for the last few days. We’re really excited about it and hope to see a few of you there! And for those of you who can’t make it, we are going to try posting a video soon after. Now with all the preparation, I’ve been a little lax with my regular skincare routine. So, I wanted to take some time out today and just relax. One of my favourite ways to pamper myself at home is with a DIY face mask.  But, this isn’t just any face mask. It’s rich, it’s luxurious and it’s oh so chocolatey…and best of all, you can eat it too! Well…..only if you really want to…

I’ve been intrigued by homemade face masks since I was a young teen. In India, it’s quite common to use a weekly face pack made with chickpea flour and turmeric to help clean and brighten the skin. Over the years, I’ve experimented with different combinations. A few worked, but with others I couldn’t quite tell if they worked! Even if they didn’t work, it was great to take 15 minutes out of my day to just put my feet up, close my eyes and relax while the mask worked it’s magic. Today, I wanted to share one of the most decadent homemade masks you can imagine. It’s made with just three simple ingredients we all have in our kitchens – cocoa powder, honey and yogurt. The cocoa powder is a great source of antioxidants, the honey acts as a humectant and the yogurt soothes the skin. It’s the perfect mask for the winter season since it helps rehydrate the skin. If you have extra-dry skin, I recommend replacing the yogurt with almond oil for better results.
What are your favourite homemade masks? Do you think they work? We would love to hear about your experience! In the meanwhile, I’ll leave you with the recipe for this decadent chocolate mask. So ladies, take off those glasses (or not!) and take some time out for yourself.

Ingredients:

1 tsp cocoa powder
1 tsp yogurt
1 tsp manuka honey

Instructions:

1. Blend the cocoa powder with the honey and yogurt. Cocoa powder can be difficult to blend, so be patient with this step. Keep mixing until the mixture looks like melted chocolate.
2. Clean your face with lukewarm water. Dab dry and then apply the mask evenly all over your face except the eye and lip areas. Relax for 15-20 minutes and let the mask do it’s magic.
3. Wash off with lukewarm water and dab dry. Apply your favourite moisturizer. You’re done!

Using food ingredients on your skin will provide similar benefits to when they are eaten, but there are always some minor differences.  Here are the benefits that you can expect from this DIY chocolate yogurt mask…
Cocoa – Brimming with antioxidants, cocoa can help fight sun damage and provide you with anti-aging benefits.  How can you refuse a chocolate without calories?
Yogurt – Because yogurt contains lactic acid, it acts as a natural exfoliant when applied onto the skin.  The zinc found in yogurt can also fight pesky blemishes and may even shrink the appearance of large pores.
Manuka Honey – This aromatic honey is indigenous to New Zealand.  It has been popping up in various beauty products recently because of its ability to calm inflammation, soften dry, cracked skin and aid in skin healing and regeneration.

  1. I tried a similar recipe before but the quantities were too big. These amounts are perfect. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Ooh I love this. I adore chocolate so having this on my face sounds heavenly. I too love making homemade masks yet haven’t done it in quite sometime. Back in 2009 I posted some recipes for various types of masks but just haven’t had that time lately to kick my feet back. I’ll be sure to try this and send the recipe off to my daughter at school. I’m sure she and her roommates will love to try it.

Thanks for sharing and oh by the way, your skin does look beautiful!
